The National Banner of Finland

A great many things are said about the Republic of Finland, including that it is considered by many as one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The beautiful territory is represented by the Finnish flag, one of many flag of Europe. Like other Scandinavian banners, the national flag of Finland displays the Scandinavian cross (in blue) on a single colored field. No matter what the weather conditions are like, the Finnish people fly their flags from flag poles and all kinds of other objects throughout the world.

Like other European flags, the flag of Finland has different variations in use. The Finnish military, for example, flies their respective version of the national banner from all kinds of vessels, and flag poles, and such. The difference with the national flag is that the military banner is a swallow-tailed type flag. Also, the Presidential version is very similar to both flags, the only different being that it displays the Cross of Liberty in the upper left section.

Like the national banners of Sweden and Norway, the design of the Finnish flag is also based on the Scandinavian cross. The so called “Nordic Cross” is also found on the national flags of Denmark and Iceland. All of the Scandinavian countries have officially adopted such flags and at times can be observed flown from flag poles grouped together. The very first flag, however, to display the Nordic Cross was the so called Danish “Dannebrog.” Thereafter, the other remaining countries followed. Other than the Danish national banner, the Norwegian one was the first to display three different colors. Even though a similar pattern is found on all flags, the each enjoy their respective history.

The Republic of Finland is a Northern European country, and was considered a Swedish country some 200 years ago. Its declaration of independence from Russia occurred in 1917, and triggered a civil war between Russia, and later Germany during the Second World War. It claimed more of a neutral position during the years of the Cold War.

As mentioned above, different variations of the Finnish flag are attached to all kinds of flag poles in our day. The commonly displayed national banner can be used by all inhabitants, all kinds of organizations, municipalities and such. Interestingly, and unlike some other countries, Finland allows for everyone to display the national banner whenever they see fit.
