Babinda in an old fashioned small town in far north Queensland, simply to the south of Cairns. It's a sugar city in the center of north Queensland and locals use either Innifail or Cairns as their major service centre. The Bruce Road no longer runs through Babinda so you will need to switch off the highway to visit. With only 1000 or so people, Babinda isn't a massive place, however it is spread out and has most of the necessary conveniences, like a supermarket, chemist, faculties, bakery, pub hardware store and so on. It's also got a thriving crafts community, the output of which can on occasion be found across the road from the library and police station.
Babinda is an especially wet place and you'd be sensible to keep an umbrella convenient. Annually the award for Australia’s wettest town, the Golden Gumboot Award, is fiercely contended by Babinda and Tully. Babinda often wins. The neighbors don’t seem to care the rain though and it is often visitors and incomers who find it a bit tedious occasionally.
Seven kilometres to the west of Babinda you will find the Babinda Boulders, which is a truly popular swimming hole for locals and visitors alike. Even in summer, the water is nicely cool. The water for Babinda Stream comes from the mountains behind and has done so for millenia, cascading down the mountain over the stones in Babinda Creek, continually smoothing their surface.
The Boulders can be threatening during periods of very high rainfall, thanks to the amount of water rushing down the mountain, and many unsuspecting visitors (and neighbors) have been caught unawares on the incorrect side of the stream. Babinda is a pretty place with tons of examples of old Queensland design, for example the Hospice, Post Office and State Hotel, as well as many old Queensland style homes.
