Back in 16th century, glass was not often used, as it was a very expensive item because it was not very easy to produce. Very wealthy people could afford to buy it and live in houses with glazed windows. Sash windows were first used in the 17th century. This was the age when heavy glass was held in frames made of thick oak and varnished bars. Then from the dawn of the 18th century, the production of cylinder glass represented a relatively major technological advance.
This new type of glass was much thinner and could be manufactured in larger sizes. This meant that sashes could be produced in much lighter weight and to a higher degree of decorative detail, aptly befitting the gracious Georgian period.

For the wealthy people, sash windows became a much-wanted commodity. After 1850, the need of using sash windows further increased with the introduction of plate glass. Now larger windows were made.
The original sash windows were made of two glazed sashes. These slid vertically into a solid timber frame encased in the stone or brick walls. Cords, being balanced by metal weights, were used to support sashes that were raised in an open position.
Following the advent of lighter plate glass, some windows were built very tall. They consisted of sashes that slid vertically as groups of six, eight or even more. These generously proportioned windows were used in the grander homes and buildings in keeping with large sized rooms. The window frames were mostly made of softwood and then painted.
Although these windows may seem to be simple but in fact the sash windows made today are much simpler than that used in the past. Sash windows of modern age use spiral balances instead of the cords and weights. These windows are more reliable and hard to repair and thus modern advancement has changed the historic development of the sash window.
