Changing the flint in a lighter is an important part of maintaining a working lighter. Zippo lighters are the simplest to change. Youll find that jet lighters do not use a flint (they use electricity), and disposable lighters do not offer an easy way to change the flint, without damaging the lighter. However, if you have a Zippo, youll find that changing out that flint is pretty simple.
Step One: The very first thing that youll need to do is to remove the insert from the outer case. This is done by sliding the outer case down, just as if you were going to refill the lighter fluid. Take care during this process so that you do not damage your lighter.
Step Two: Unscrew the flint tube/spring assembly from the bottom of the inner insert. You will need a small flathead screwdriver or a similar tool (a dime will work) to do this.
Step Three: Remove the screw from the insert and make sure that the attached spring comes free of the insert, as well. Make sure that you do not bend or damage the spring during this operation.
Step Four: Check to ensure that the old flint has been removed from the tube; if there is still a small remainder of flint, remove it from the tube now. Do not add new flint to the tube until all of the old flint has been removed.
Step Five: Put the new flint in place. Make sure you do not damage the assembly during this operation.
Step Six: Now, gently replace the spring on the tube assembly, taking care not to bend the spring.
Step Seven: Slide the assembly back into the inner insert and tighten the screw lightly. Make sure that the assembly is fully screwed in place, but make sure that you do not over tighten the screw, as this can strip the threads and prevent you from removing it in the future.
Step Eight: Replace the inner insert into the outer case. If the case does not fit properly, make sure that the flint tube screw is fully tightened.
Once youve replaced the inner insert, your job is finished. You have now replaced your flint and can light your Zippo once more. As you practice this procedure and become more familiar with the lighters components, you will find that the process of replacement requires less and less time to perform.
