While it is true that some people have lost a lot of weight on these diets, it is very important to realize that carbs are not actually what causes people to gain weight. We gain weight when we consume more calories than we burn, and the body stores these calories as fat.

Carbs provide energy for the body. One risk of low carb diets is that people may take away the energy source that the body needs to stay active.

Good carbs are processed slowly by the body, so they make a more stable source of energy. It is the bad carbs, such as white rice and white bread, that should be avoided or eaten sparingly.

Carbs that the body processes quickly will provide a quick jolt of energy that doesn’t last. Choosing the right carbs is a better goal than avoiding carbs entirely for most people.
