An Inside Look Into How Eyelashes Grow

Your eyelashes are very slow growing. It typically takes several months for eyelashes to grow in. When you feel as though your eyelashes are sparse, you must exercise tremendous patience while awaiting their return. The trigger for your eyelash loss will directly impact their growth rate. Certain things will delay the regrowth and you will have to wait much longer. Lots of things can impact eyelash loss as well: your genetics, aging, hormones, lifestyle and even diet. People that experience this often have to go the route of permanent fake eyelashes. The process of eyelash growth is divided into three phases:

Phase one: Anagen Growth Phase. We also refer to this phase as the “active growth phase.” During this phase, over 30% of your eyelashes are briskly growing and regenerating. This an extended phase, which can continue for as long as seven weeks.

Phase two: Catagen Growth Cycle. During this time, your eyelashes stop growing. In fact your follicles begin to shrink and retract. We refer to this as the “lag phase.” This phase is short, lasting a mere three weeks.

The Telogen Growth Stage is the final stage where the eyelash falls out. You have eyelashes in every stage of growth at all times. This staggering of the phases is why you don’t lose all your eyelashes at any one time.

The eyelashes will grow faster on people who do not smoke or drink alcohol heavily. A healthy lifestyle will result in faster growth of your eyelashes as well. Individuals who are not as healthy will have eyelashes that grow slower. Many different elements, including health or the general condition of your eyelashes can affect their growth. Eyelash growth can be delayed for a very long time.

Your age also plays a role in the amount of time it will take you to regrow your eyelashes. The rate of hair loss increases as you age. Similarly, the older you are, the longer it will take for it to grow back, if it does grow back. Therefore, older individuals body hair will grow at a slower rate than those who are younger. So someone who is young will be able to grow their body hair and eyelashes more quickly.

All in all, an eyelash takes approximately 12 weeks to re-grow after it has fallen out. If it has taken longer to reappear, it is unlikely that the eyelash will regrow at all. Maximizing the growth of the active growth phase is the best strategy for having longer eyelashes. Products that condition the eyelash to enhance its growth are available for sale in stores.
